Welcome to our B&B. Are you ready to enter in another era?
The B&B Ospitaliere La Torre Merlata is located in Palestro (PV), the first Lombard town after the Piedmont border. This small town of two thousand inhabitants was the scene, on May 30-31, 1859, of one of the most important battles of the Second War of Independence, which saw the victorious Franco-Piedmontese army over the Austrian troops. In addition to this important historical event, Palestro has been for centuries a point of reference for trade because of its strategic position near the river Sesia, and thanks to the medieval castle that originally had six towers. Today remains only the Visconti Tower, dating back to the 12th century, which houses our B&B: thirty meters high and well preserved, it dominates much of the Lombard countryside, whose fields, mainly cultivated with rice, are crossed by an ancient road: certainly the original Via Francigena traveled by Sigerico.
The structure is located along the Lombard route of the Via Francigena, a European pilgrimage way that leads from Canterbury to Rome. We have restored a building of the nineteenth-century nearby the Tower, furnished with passion and with international and traditional taste.
Our guests, crossed the entrance, feel immediately comfortable reliving the atmosphere of past times. The B&B is realized in 70 square meters located on two floors and arranged to accommodate three people: two in the bedroom and one in a comfortable bed in the living area. The room, equipped with autonomous heating, is composed by a double bed with the possibility of creating two single beds and has a private bathroom. We chose not to install a television to fully enjoy the silence and harmony of the tower.
Outside there is a large garden where visitors can relax in contact with nature. During the summer our guests can taste the breakfast under the shade of a cherry tree or a birch. Nearby the tower you can appreciate the colors and the smells of an immense orchard that houses more than 25 species of trees: lime, fig, wild cherry, peach, walnut, cherry, persimmon, roses, plane, hazel, beech, oak, robinia pseudoacacia, quince, plum and many others. From here you can enjoy a view of the open countryside and the Via Francigena. And if you are equipped with the camping tend you can spend here a medieval night. Nevertheless we are happy to welcome also cyclists for a coffee or a snack, horseback travelers and hikers.
